Barack Obama may not have made any headway against frontrunner Hillary Clinton in the national polls, but he can still pack in the donations. Jim Kuhnhenn reports for the Associated Press:
Democrat Barack Obama raised more than $19 million for the presidential primary elections from July through September, bringing his total for the year to nearly $80 million, his campaign said Monday. The summer total includes donations from 93,000 new contributors, aides said. Obama also raised money for the general election, making his overall contributions more than $20 million for the quarter.
The third-quarter contributions were less than Obama raised in each of the first two quarters. But the total still kept him at the top of the fundraising pack--at least temporarily.
Read it all at the link above. The third quarter is one of the toughest for political fundraising, encompassing the summer vacation months, but Obama sets the bar pretty high for Hillary Clinton's team.
One word about his "small donors," though. Not to say he hasn't set records for small donations, but as a reader (sorry, I forgot who it was) pointed out earlier this year, much of this comes from his merchandising. Obama "stuff" is by far the most popular of any candidate's in either party, but all these sales count as contributions and every buyer therefore becomes a "small donor." That's all as required by law, but we do have to consider that some of those small donors may have just wanted the tee shirt.

Don't pooh pooh the auto-validation of a partisan piece of apparel!
The year: 1970! An 8 1/2 yo boy in the deep south opens a Christmas package! Inside: (inexplicably) a pair of Minnesota Vikings pajamas!
No, I was too active to watch all (ANY!) of their games on teevee, but GOSH DARNIT! I had become a Minnesota Vikings fan! Even painted my electric football game team Purple and White.
