It is a grand American political tradition that no one - especially current Presidential candidates - may indicate the slightest interest in the Vice Presidency. To openly declare oneself available for the second slot is to guarantee one will not get it. You must deny, deny, deny, right up until the moment you accept the offer.
Bill Richardson has now demonstrated his devotion to traditional political values by declaring he will finish his term as New Mexico's Governor if he fails to win the Presidency, Klaus Marre reports for The Hill:
Richardson, who often is talked about as an attractive vice presidential candidate and this week also had to speak to whether he would run for his state's open Senate seat, said that he is seeking to become commander in chief and nothing else."I'm not interested in the vice presidency," Richardson told CNN. "If it doesn't work out for me as president, I'll go back to the best job in the world, governor of New Mexico, in the sunset, riding my horse."
Read the rest at the link above. Say, if being Governor of NM is "the best job in the world," why is he trying for a demotion by running for President?
