Michigan primary flap not over; Levin still flapping

The ongoing saga between Michigan Democrats and the DNC over the state party's determination to hold its primary earlier than the national committee rules permit has been percolating along, as we have covered HERE and HERE and HERE. Now Senator Carl Levin, the well-known blowhard in the forefront of the move is, well, blowing hard again, reports Roger Simon for The Politico:

Sen. Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, threatened Wednesday to hold Michigan's presidential nominating contest on the same day as the New Hampshire primary in order to end New Hampshire's "cockamamie" first-in-the nation role.

"No state should have that dominant a role," Levin said at a breakfast with reporters. "New Hampshire has a hammerlock, folks."

While Michigan recently passed a law saying it would hold its primary on Jan. 15 -- causing New Hampshire to say it would go no later than Jan. 8 -- Levin said Michigan Democrats now could hold a caucus and move up to the same day as New Hampshire.

Read the rest at the above link. Of course, New Hampshire is well prepared to move as early as necessary to retain their "first-in-the-nation" status, and has greased the process to counter any other state's move up - as Levin himself acknowledges. Apparently, as happens more often than not, years in the Senate have endowed Levin with a grossly inflated sense of the worth of his own opinion and, even if his state party is damaged in the process, he will bask in the attention he's getting now.

Michigan's state motto is "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circum spice" - which obviously assumes Levin will spend most of his time in DC.

The Democrats have nothing ... (Below threshold)
jpm100:

The Democrats have nothing to offer Michigan except 'tough nuts' because they plan to jack up the Fuel Economy standards. Even Toyota is complaining about the new standards (and that's round 1). Toyota is already making smaller cars for its own market, so they really just need to make more of those with some changes and bring them here. The US makers will have a tougher time meeting the new standards.

Basically the new standards (and I suspect more on the way) will cost Michigan jobs. They basically don't want to campaign much in Michigan with National attention on them with nothing positive to offer.

Michiganers are really angry at their State government right now for how the budget crisis was handled with Granholm being the main focus of their ire.

Its bad enough that there could be backlash against federal level Democrats in the State. They really shouldn't be jerking the state around much especially with blowing off the debate.

Yeah, reducing our dependence on foreign oil - what a terrible idea. What ARE those Democrats thinking...?

jpm100:

For one, people don't give a rats ass about foreign oil or domestic. They care about the price. Even if we achieved independence, our prices would still be set by the global market which would still be controlled by OPEC.

Because of the price and the influence OPEC can wield on the rest of the world, the Middle East would be just as strategic as it is now.

If independence was truly the goal, we would have followed France, Japan, and China's lead in nuclear power development. (They must really look at us as backwards.) More could also be done with domestic coal and oil if we were allowed.

Lastly, the oil companies/cartels are laughing at you.

Normally environmentalists are a pain in the ass of the oil companies when they enforce pollution controls that increase costs and deny access to new oil fields which produce oil more cheaply when they are new.

However, they don't care one bit about how much they produce. If they produce less, they'll just charge more. In fact, you'll do them a favor since the cost of production will go down some.

Make that "some conservatives don't give a rat's ass" - thinking people know better.

But if you don't watch out, Mr. Big has hired this really bad Dominatrix type - full black leather outfit, metal studs, stiletto heels, not bad if you're into that sort of thing (and I know all about you Ron Paul types) - who will swoop in and squeeze your vowels so hard you'll squeal "Ys, Mstrss! Mr, pls!"
