Maria Cantwell aide arrested in sex sting, fired

James Michael McHaney was charged in court last Saturday.

A member of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell's staff has been charged in federal court after a sting operation in which he allegedly solicited sex from what he thought was a 13-year-old boy.

James Michael McHaney, 28, was charged Saturday in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., with using a computer to arrange a sexual encounter with an informant posing as a boy, according to court records.

McHaney was arrested Friday afternoon by the FBI after he allegedly told an FBI witness he was ready to meet. He later asked for the boy's photo.

The Smoking Gun Web site broke the story Monday.

McHaney joined Cantwell's staff in 2006. He could not be reached for comment.

In a statement, Cantwell's chief of staff, Michael Meehan, said, "late Friday afternoon the FBI informed our office that a Senate employee was arrested. The employee was immediately fired.

"Our office has and will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing federal criminal investigation. Senator Cantwell has zero tolerance for crimes against children."

Cantwell's office did not respond to questions about whether a computer in her congressional office was used in the alleged solicitation.

In a case like this I would see no reason for the Senator''s office not to be totally transparent as to what McHaney did or didn't do in Cantwell's office. Still when it comes to even a hint of scandall, many politician's natural tendency is to stonewall.

Nevertheless I'll give Cantwell the benefit of a doubt. There are sick people in every part of society. That includes the offices of elected officials(Democrat and Republican) in Washington.

Update- Corrected post to Senator, rather than Congresswoman as I previously wrote.

I want to see the Pubs blas... (Below threshold)

I want to see the Pubs blast this. I want to see any Conserv. media get on this and call the Dems, the Party of Immorality. I am sick and tired of the MSM calling the Pubs the Party of Corruption. Dems are ,have been , indicted day after day, Hsu today, but the MSM keeps calling the Pubs the real Party of Sin. Nonsense. Both parties have their sinners and dupes but the Dems seem to be the real immoralists as Annie Coulter has avered. Then take afte the Dems who tried to blackmail the GOP in Hawaii.

I would love to see the Republicans focus on this, a scandal involving some aide in charge of scheduling for a Senator who's not even up for re-election. I'm sure that will stick to every Democrat. Good thinking Kooks.

Hey Glenn, can we assume you think it would be reasonable for the Democrats to use this against all Republicans?

Who are the "real immoralists" again?
