We have under a year till next year's election. Why am I fatigued already? From AP-
GRINNELL, Iowa - Despite criticism from a few rivals, Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday kept pressing out-of-state students attending college in Iowa to return over their holiday break and vote in the Democratic caucus on Jan. 3.Obama apparently believes in what one famous former Illinois resident said. 'Vote early, vote often.' If these students are registered in other states, they could be committing felonies or misdemeanors by voting in their home state in addition to taking part in the Iowa caucus. Is it good presidential campaign strategy to encourage crime?"Don't listen to them, don't listen to them," he said of the critics. "Don't let somebody tell you that you are not part of this process -- because your future is at stake, and America's future is at stake."
Speaking at a concert hall packed with students at Grinnell College, he said students who attend school in the state have established residency by doing so and are able to take part in the caucuses. The Illinois senator is polling strongly among young people in Iowa and could have much to gain in the close presidential nomination race from coeds willing to cut short their holiday and take part in the caucus.
Democratic rivals are divided over whether Obama is playing by the spirit of the rules. Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chris Dodd have criticized the effort, with Dodd saying, "That may be the way politics is played in Chicago, but not in Iowa." Clinton said she's encouraging people who live and pay taxes in Iowa to show up. But John Edwards said the rules are "fairly liberal" when it comes to out-of-state students caucusing.
All snark aside, I'm betting all the major candidates are using similar tactics. The junior Senator from Illinois may be best served in the future by not so brazenly announcing legal but unsavory campaign tactics.

"Could be committing felonies or misdemeanors..."? They either are breaking the law or they aren't.
You've suggested that are breaking the law and I think you might want to check into that further, Bill. I don't belive that's correct.

Lee,
You quoted what I wrote. I said 'could be'. Is it possible that taking part in the Iowa caucus and then voting in your home state's primary would be illegal? I don't know, and unless you've studied the election laws of ALL 50 states, you don't either.
As people have pointed out, you'd be surprised what is against the law in some parts of this great country.
Bill

Obviously you didn't look into the legality before making the claim that Obama was encouraging crime, and don't intend to now. You might find out that you're wrong, and that would blow your little bullshit session about Obama encouraging crime.
Clue: You don't have to be 18 to participate in the Iowa caucus. You can be 17 and participate so long as you turn 18 by next November's general election.
It's a caucus -- do you even know what a caucus is, Bill? Did you do ANY research before making your baseless, fact-less assertion that Obama may be "encouraging crime"?

If they have residency in Iowa they can simply register there, and participate in the caucuses and vote there. After all, students will be in school in November (those that don't graduate between now and then, that is).

I think it's interesting how strongly the communist, err I mean Democrat, politicians rely on the young, inexperiencied, naive, and gullible inmates of indoctrination centers (aka, colleges & universities) for votes.
You'd think they'd get enough from the suers (pronounced "sewers", a.k.a. lawyers), extortionists (union members), indoctrinators (professors and journalists), and professional entitlement recipients; but no, they must also prey on the young and ignorant.

Bill, you have to get used to Lee Ward putting words in your mouth. He writes on Blue, but bans any commenter who challenges him there, and is himself banned from the main page, so he has to look for people to annoy.
Of course, any rational person reading your post would see no accusation, only questions.
In South Carolina, a person who participated in the Iowa caucuses would be ineligible to vote in our primaries.
The real point is that Obama is the first candidate in the history of the Iowa caucuses to personally urge non-resident students to register and vote in the caucuses. If they are otherwise eligible, and don't attempt to also vote absentee in their home states, it's perfectly legal. Nonetheless, the Iowans may not like it being openly advocated - and they have the right to vote for whomever they wish.

Amazing how often you conservatives get it wrong - and oh by the way Bill, still waiting for your correction on your assertion that what Obama is doing is encouraging crime - it's absolutely nothing of the sort.
So this story turns out to be just more right wing BS, no surprise there.

News Report: "Barack Obama encourages Iowans to drive their cars to the caucus meetings".
Wizbang Politics: "Barack Obama ecnourages people to drive thieir cars, and if they drive their cars faster than the speed limit then they are breaking the law -- therefore Obama is encouraging people to break the law.
Obama encouraging people to drive is "encouraging people to break the law" only if those people choose to break the law. The same is true with respect to Obama's request of these students.

Lee doesn't know me very well.
I'm a registered democrat.
A reader of The New Republic, National Review, New York Times, Michelle Malkin, Frank Rich, and others from both sides of the political spectrum.
I can't stand Mark Steyn.
I'm no fan of Rudy Giuliani. As for the major nominees of both parties, I'm lukewarm at best to every single one of them.
I've given wizbang contributor Lorie Byrd my Knucklehead award. And survived!
My Knucklehead awards at TFM have been won by Democrats and Republicans. If you count governors, I've given it to 7 Dems and 7 Republicans.
I voted for Bill Clinton once. Heck I voted for John Anderson too over Ronald Reagan.
My views on Immigration matters, GLBT issues, and the minimum wage are hardly in line with many of Wizbang's contributors or most of what would be called the conservative blogosphere.
I question both Democrats and Republicans on a regular basis.
I've been called or referred to indirectly
as a moonbat by Michelle Malkin
A right wing nut at Daily Kos
and
A center of the road blogger by Jim Johnson at State of Sunshine.
Jim Johnson is closest to getting it right.
I make mistakes and fess up to them. I'm not perfect.

Is it really that unsavory? The Iowa caucuses are a kingmaker, and they come down to old-fashioned retail politics. It's not like he's encouraging voter supression or push-polling against opposing candidates. He's telling strong supporters who could potentially caucus to please do so! The primaries will be over before they reach many states, including mine. If someone can vote in Iowa, seems to me they should.

The assertion that Obama is asking Iowa students to break the law is followed by a question mark -- and that let's the guy off the hook? Naw, not in my book. It's the same cheap trick that Fox News pulls on the graphics at the bottom of the screen, like, "bin-Laden wants Clinton to Win (question mark).
Jim thinks the question mark let's the writer get away with saying anything, as long as they tag it with a question mark. What a putz.
And that's the reason I'm not allowed to comment on the main page - too many question marks and shady practices like this were questioned and challenged - repeatedly.

Don't forget my posts two days ago on Laura Lingle and Maria Cantwell, one democrat and one republican, both with staffer issues. Is that make me unfair and unbalanced?(It may say I am unmedicated)
BTW if the candidate asking out of state students to caucus was Clinton, Paul, McCain, Thompson, Edwards so on and so on, I would have said the same thing.
Jim points out a SC student caucussing in IA would be ineligible to vote in SC. That means there is at least one state it would be a felony or misdemeanor. I made my case.
Your honor I ask Lee be given 50 lashes with a wet noodle or be forced to proofread a web fiction story of mine about a man turned into a pregnant circus elephant. Do I hear any objections?

So if someone feels you aren't being fair they're supposed to first run a tally of your posts - good or bad - Repub or Dem -- and decide whether to call you on it based on your weekly cume? snork!
It's not a question of fair and balanced - I just called you on your suggestion that Obama was asking students to break the law when -- as far as I could tell -- you're providing no support whatsoever for that claim.
