ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Supporters of Republican presidential candidate hope to launch a blimp bearing his name next week from Elizabeth City, N.C.I do wonder how effective this will be when it comes to bringing in voters for the Congressman. Feel free to make any non-profane wisecracks you wish.Supporters hope to fly the 200-foot-long blimp up the East Coast over major cities before taking it to New Hampshire for a couple weeks. New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary is Jan. 8.
Liberty Political Advertising is organizing the project. A Web site dedicated to the blimp says the group has raised more than $200,000 as of Friday evening. The blimp isn't officially affiliated with the Texas congressman's campaign.

There are serious questions about this project.
The "company" is set up as a business to sell advertising, which they seem to think means they are exempt from campaign finance regulations. I doubt it. Wal-Mart is a "for-profit" company, too, but if they painted all their trucks with "Thompson for President" slogans, I suspect the FEC would have something to say about it.
It is typical of Ron Paul supporters, though. They, like Paul himself, believe they can define the law as they see fit.

The project is a pay-per-minute advert service. No tax -deductibility is claimed. Individual accounting statements will be in the form of receipts for payment which are re-sent to the FEC by the client.
If there's any problemo in that, Endele! lest 2012 arrive and the Mayan calender runs out!
