Rep. Alcee Hastings thinks Christmas resolution a plot

Apparently the congressman hasn't noticed how commercial Christmas has become. From the Palm Beach Post-

U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, was one of only nine House members last week to vote against a resolution "recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith."

A Hastings statement said the resolution was "not about supporting Christmas. It was another sad attempt by conservative Republicans to skew the line between Church and State and impose their belief that America is a Christian nation."

U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Delray Beach, who voted against a similar Christmas resolution last year, was absent for last week's vote. U.S. Reps. Ron Klein, D-Boca Raton, and Tim Mahoney, D-Palm Beach Gardens, supported the resolution.

In all fairness to Hastings, eight other members of Congress joined him in voting the way he did. Including Congressman Jim McDermott who had this reasoning for voting no.

The veteran Seattle Democrat voted against a House resolution recognizing the importance of Christmas, but called it a protest against President Bush's veto of a children's health care bill.

"While the Republicans are passing a resolution celebrating Christmas, the president was vetoing health care for children. There's a little bit of irony going on around here," McDermott said Thursday.

I'd say there was a lot of stupidity happening here Congressman and I've been supportive of the S-chip legislation.

Hastings and McDermott have shown themselves to be far removed from reality. Unfortunately neither is liable to leaving congress any time soon.

Let us see. We have Bagdhad... (Below threshold)

Let us see. We have Bagdhad Jim, Alcee the excommunicated judge, varied NoCal leftist socialists who are against Christians and Christmas. Should we be surprised? These guys are secularists, liberals, humanists but surely not Christian. Not Wexler whose religion appears to be Big Govt. I was glad King brought this up since the lefties brought up a resolution to thank Islam a week before this resolution!! Yipe. Islam. Which has never contributed to anything American in language, heritage, history, inventions or culture or freedom! What tripe!

nogo war:

Have we really come to point, here in the 21st century (A.D. of course) that such crap is necessary?
Are some Christians so insecure that Congress needs to do this?
Does no one see this as erosion between church and state?

If anyones religious views are dependent upon recognition from Congress to validate them..
then you don't really believe.

I am a Christian. My wife and I go to church several time a week. Like a few other Christians I, at times use adjectives like Bullshit...

But in the spirit this desperation this brings...
Please make Huck or Mitt your nominee.
Most Americans have seen what a theocracy leadership has done to the middle east.
Do you really believe a theocratic candidate will sway the Independents that will determine our next President?

Again, I do not need Congress to tell me what Christmas means as a Christian.

Congress routinely recognizes, with these meaningless but harmless Resolutions, all sorts of events, projects, organizations, religious holidays, animal shelters, etc. If a particular member or members of Congress voted against all of them on principle, that would be fine. To vote against Christmas AFTER having voted FOR a pro-Islam resolution (and, presumably, hundreds or thousands of others), though, seems a bit odd.

in my own lifetime i have seen the erosion of even of being able to say, merry christmas in public.

I have also seen Christmas Trees taken down and other religious objects place up.

the sad thing is this: if the nation would just enforce the older rules governing the FCC and allow many outlets for TV, Cable, Sattelite, and Radio to be in the hands of more owners, the problem I believe wouldn't have gotten so out hand.

oh, by the way, the problem it totally out of hand, and yes Virginia not only is a Christian Nation it is based on Protestantism as well and one need look no further than the origins of the English Civil War and wouldn't you know it, Guy Fawke's Day and the alleged Catholic plots.

The constitution has many references to God, and any Christian knows that Jesus is God, that's why we're Christians, followers of Christ who is God.

Christmas is the church mass of the birth of Jesus when God became man.

Can't make this stuff up.

You know the outrageousness of all of this is that when the French get all huffy that tourists and guests to their nation don't learn to speak French (visit Germany and see what they say there too!) but if you say in America it would be a good idea to learn the history of the nation and it FOUNDING PRINCIPALS, people get their knickers in a twist.

Just to refresh old memories or non existant ones:

The English Civil War so bad, with forced Protestanism, forced Catholicism, foreign Kings superceding foreign Kings, that parts of ENgland bailed, and actually left England because it was intolerable. Englishmen who swear up and down about their history... bailed!

now this christmas, and by the way, Merry Christmas to you!, the Vatican has taken away the Nativity scene and replaced it with a 'Builder's scene of Joseph's workshop with a young boy Jesus and quotes the Gospel of Matthew for it's reasoning"

now Americans, and I mean all Americans of all stripes, here's a glimpse into our shared history and why there is freedom of religion which many benefit from but don't know the reason's why, which i stated above.

Because the Bible has indeed been translated into English (Tynsdale with Martin Luther Circa 1520) and because I'm free in American to do so, i picked up a Bible and read the Gospel of Matthew to see the part where the Vatican says it got it's inspiration.

Are you ready, i had to tell my own sister who was shocked, there is no mention of Joseph's workshop! Jesus' birth is in Bethlehem.

The Vatican is lying, outright lying.

And the worst of it: Jesus warns against the Builders over an over again. St. Paul warns about the builders. The Vatican is calling St. Joseph a Builder... may God forgive them.

Freedom of Religion, freedom of CHRISTIAN religion is what's at play here people, and it happening still to this day.

So you say it's somebody else's fight...

funny thing is come to think of it, it's somebody's else's fight then in somebody's else's country because if you ignore the Christian West, with St. Patrick, St. Nicholas (santa clause is based on this saint of great miracles who partakes in the birth of Christ, and of course the WESTERN audacity to actually go back to the original Greek of the New Testament so they could read it themselves, Christians would be only those who learned Latin. So, without freedom it would be a world of Roman Catholics and any Tom, Dick and Harry who's left out of that box.

God Bless America. God bless our Freedoms. God Bless our Christian Forefathers WHO MADE THIS COUNTRY AND WHO WROTE THE CONSTITUTION AND WHO FOUGHT THE ENGLISH AND THE HESSIANS, AND FOUGHT THE CIVIL WAR, WHO GOT DRAGGED INTO 2 WORLD WARS, etc, etc, et cetera, so didn't you know they were Christians....

You are living in a Christian Nation and it always has been. Yes it is and it will be. There are Millions and Millions and Millions of people who celebrate Christmas and who beleive in Jesus of Nazareth.

Not to mention, that if you read Art. 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli, ratified unanimously by the Senate and Signed by John Adams (one of the founding fathers) in 1797 you will note the following: "Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries." So this is NOT a Christian Nation, by the words of one of the Founding Fathers himself.

my original point was about... (Below threshold)
jimmy:

my original point was about the FCC, and forced Protestantism and forced Catholicism from the English Civil War.

and how the Constitution removes the powers of Religion from the Head of State, Removes the Monarchy, and Removes Vatican Influence, all of this in an unspoken Christian dialogue.

The term in usage like this: 1776 A.D.: Annos Domini {latin}, means in the Year of our Lord (that being Jesus Christ of Nazareth birth and 1776 years later)

I don't believe in forced Religion and i don't like what Mitt Romney is all about and how he is un-doing the seperation of Church and State.

However, if Congress wants to celebrate Christmas, they can!! For it is a Christian Nation don't you know. And how clumsy and illiterate some may proceed foward with that vote, it is their right.

Shall we talk about the Pilgrims, the Puritans, Jamestown, Plymouth, Sir. Francis Drake, Sir Francis Bacon, the Geneva Bible, Tynsdale Bible, Martin Luther Bible in English, Book of Kells, Book of Armagh, Boof of Lindesfarne, etc.

My God, the US Constitution figured this out better than anyone.

And if you have real guts, read about Madison. A master of many languages is work for the nation FREED the world along with Jefferson and Franklin.

Amazing. Don't like America now, do we.

Merry Christmas, i hold no grudges.

Peace and happiness for your families.

And protection for my Christian Faith unto mine this Holiday season.

To the Holy Seat in Heaven, thy Grace upon all. Kingdom come and thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Amen.
