Omar Davis for Governor of Florida

How often does a five-year-old upstage the chief executive of a state?

WEST PALM BEACH -- Gov. Charlie Crist needed goodwill. Fast. So he reached into the audience and plucked 5-year-old Omar Davis out of the front row.

"Do you know who Dr. Martin Luther King was?" Crist asked Omar.

"Junior," Omar corrected.

"Right, junior," Crist said. "I'm a junior, too, I should have known that."

Crist handed Omar his business card, and told him to call him.

"Because you're the assistant manager?" Omar said.

"Close," Crist said. "I'm the governor. But that's a little like being the assistant manager."

Crist was two hours late for the Martin Luther King Jr. Coordinating Committee Annual Scholarship Breakfast, now in its 26th year. By the time he arrived, the crowd of 900 had dwindled to about 200.

The breakfast honors the work of King, along with other people who have made a difference in the community. It also rewards students for skills such as public speaking.

Is being made to wait two hours a reward? I really do dislike people who only think their own time is valuable.

However Omar did get in the last word. A five-year-old gets to correct the Governor. Isn't this a great state or what?
