Representative Tom Davis (R-Va) announced he's throwing in the towel today according to Politico. This comes a couple of days after Representative Ron Lewis (R-Ky) dropped his re-election bid under some strange circumstances.
The list of retiring Republican House members now numbers 24:
Terry Everett, R-Ala.
Rick Renzi, R-Ariz.
Duncan Hunter, R-Ca.
John Doolittle, R-Ca.
Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.
Dave Weldon, R-Fla.
Ray LaHood, R-Ill.
Jerry Weller, R-Ill.
Ron Lewis, R-Ky.
Jim McCrery, R-La.
Jim Ramstad, R-Minn.
Charles Pickering Jr., R-Miss.
Kenny Hulshof, R-Mo.
Heather Wilson, R-N.M.
Steve Pearce, R-N.M.
James Walsh, R-N.Y.
James Saxton, R-N.J.
Mike Ferguson, R-N.J.
Deborah Pryce, R-Ohio
Ralph Regula, R-Ohio
David Hobson, R-Ohio
John Peterson, R-Pa.
Thomas Davis R-Va.
Barbara Cubin, R-Wyo.
With 5 Democrats bailing out:
Tom Lantos, D-Calif.
Mark Udall, D-Colo.
Tom Allen, D-Maine
Tom Udall, D-N.M.
Michael McNulty, D-N.Y.
Needless to say it will be a tough uphill battle for the Republicans to regain the House with this lopsided retirement ratio against them. The good news for Republicans is that their likely presidential candidate John McCain is outpolling both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. A strong showing by McCain could minimize the damage down the ticket for Republicans, but the chances of retaking the House are slim to none.

That's too bad about Hunter... (Below threshold)1. Posted by bryanD | January 30, 2008 11:17 PM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
That's too bad about Hunter and Tancredo leaving. They're real marines amongst a gaggle of fags. Pickering I remember liking (but I can't remember specifics. I'll place him in my "likely" file.)
Davis and Renzi go in the "maybe" file.
Doolittle goes in the "out" stack (destination: incinerator). Likewise LaHood.
The clench-jawed whore from NM, Heather Wilson goes in the "out" file, too: her leaving ahead of the paddy wagon is no surprise. And if anyone can identify the accent she speaks with I'll award 500 cyber-bucks. Partially-paralyzed Manitoban or something.
And no, I'm not heaping calumny upon the pig for being of the female sex. It's just that her special orders soliliquys defending herself during the Gonzo-US atty firings controversy were televised and stand out as low comedy delivered dead-pan by a woman with rocks in her mouth. She might be on Youtube. Go see.
On the Dem side:
Tom Lantos: join the IDF and shut up.
Tom and Mark Udall: Hmmm...government Mormons leaving at a time when prospects are governmentally bright for Democrats...
there's a story in there somewhere.

Tom is running for the open New Mexico Senate seat and Mark is running for the open Colorado Senate seat.
