Ben Graber is abandoning his primary challenge to U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler. He plans to leave the Democratic Party and run against Wexler in November without any party affiliation.Graber finished 3rd in that primary. 1996 was the year that Wexler was first elected to office.He said a general election challenge gives him hope of winning the Broward-Palm Beach County seat Wexler first won in 1996.
Graber is a former state representative and Broward County commissioner, who left that job in 2006 to run for state Senate.
Graber and Wexler have a long, unpleasant history. Wexler defeated Graber in the 1996 congressional primary.
Note- I used to live in Congressman Wexler's district aka the Florida 19th. After redistricting in 2002, I now reside in the Florida 22nd currently represented by Democrat Ron Klein.
The Wexler camp doesn't appear any more concerned with Graber's independent candidacy than it did with Graber's now-aborted primary challenge.A no party candidate has no chance in November. So it doesn't at all surprise me that Wexler doesn't appear concerned by Graber's challenge. The Florida 19th is a Democratic stronghold.
Finance reports show that as of Dec. 31, Wexler had $1.4 million of campaign cash. Graber had a debt of $71,000 -- owed to himself -- and $4,800 in cash.That is what this change is all about. Graber can't raise any funds for his challenge. How does he plan to upset Wexler with approximately 1/20th the money the Congressman has.
I say its 50/50 at least that Graber doesn't run at all in November. Barring death or a major scandal, Congressman Robert Wexler will be re-elected in 2008.
Update- Corrected my post to say Florida 19th is a Democratic Stronghold and renumbered several other parts of the post.

Glad to see Graber has decided to become independent. A lifetime Moderate Democrat who is an independent thinker should not be held back by the corrupt leadership within the Democratic party. You continue to be impressive, Graber. You are a true leader.

With all due respect, Mr Jempty, I think you are underestimating Ben Graber. You may want to watch more closely as this campaign unfolds, I think you will be impressed as you watch this man in action.
THIS WILL BE WEXLER'S LAST TERM.
