Obama's Speech on Race

Like many of you I was genuinely shocked and disturbed by the words of Barack Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright. Obama answered the controversy that has erupted over these words with a speech today. Full text and video here.

The speech was enough to convince me that Obama does not share some of the more extreme viewpoints expressed by his pastor. While Obama again condemned Wright's rhetoric, he refused to disown the man who helped bring him to Jesus Christ, married he and his wife, and baptized his daughters. There's something to be said about a man who refuses to take the path of expediency, and instead chooses to maintain his solidarity with a man who he clearly feels has given him much to be thankful for. Twenty years of commitment to a church and a pastor is not something that many of us could summarily dismiss.

Those who continue to call on Obama to abandon his church and repudiate Wright personally have, in my opinion, crossed a line into the private and personal affairs that are clearly no business of ours. Condemning a man for his choice of a church and a pastor runs contrary to the fundamental principles upon which our nation was founded. The accusation that Obama is somehow responsible for everything Wright has said is to unfairly brand him guilty by association. It makes no more sense to me than condemning Mitt Romney who worshiped for over a decade in a church that followed an institutional form of racism.

Reverend Wright is a man and a clearly flawed one at that like all the rest of us. But he doesn't speak for Barack Obama. Barack Obama speaks for Barack Obama.

I think Andrew Sullivan has it right:

I have never felt more convinced that this man's candidacy - not this man, his candidacy - and what he can bring us to achieve - is an historic opportunity. This was a testing; and he did not merely pass it by uttering safe bromides. He addressed the intimate, painful love he has for an imperfect and sometimes embittered man. And how that love enables him to see that man's faults and pain as well as his promise. This is what my faith is about. It is what the Gospels are about. This is a candidate who does not merely speak as a Christian. He acts like a Christian.

I'm glad you're bothered by Wright's statements - most Americans are as well - but Barack wasn't "shocked and disturbed" by Reverend Wright's rants -- Barack felt perfectly happy ignoring (and thereby supporting) the racist diatribes from his church's pastor for years and years.

Only when it became a political liability to Obama pretend he was "shocked" by what was said, going so far as to actually lie by claiming at that point that he had no idea Reverend Wright has said those things. Total bullshit.

Hussein 'Tinker Bell' Obama reminds me of the worthless dog in a pack of coon dogs. The one that won't run with the pack but hurries to the tree after the pack has done the job of treeing. He expects a pat on the head and treat for lying to you.

I must have missed the posts where you were "genuinely shocked and disturbed" before . . .

The question is not whether Obama will condemn those statements once they became public knowledge; we all knew he would. The question is why he didn't do so earlier. The idea he hadn't known about them is simply preposterous, since they came from his close friend, mentor, and adviser of more than 20 years.

Obama's entire rationale for his candidacy is that experience doesn't matter at all: all that counts is good judgment. What sort of judgment does it demonstrate to remain part of a congregation where the pastor - again, a close friend, mentor, and adviser - describes 9/11 as America's "chickens coming home to roost," without objection, for a further seven years?

Incidentally, that particular phrase is very familiar. I recall the same words being spoken by Malcolm X - on the occasion of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Another fantastic and inspirational speech by Obama. Thanks to an almost one hour free air time by the media. So I guess now you know the dilemma faced by many muslims...I condemed but yet I cannot disowned my muslim brother.

How many of you whites feeling guilty after Obama's speech? Also, main problem of Americans is not race...its how they judge people by their words rather than by their actions. So if your are a real sucker for inspirational words...vote Obama.

Time to leave the past behind. Ironically Obama goes to a church and listens to a pastor from the past who will start up old wounds every know and then. I dun really know how anyone can look towards a new future from there. Obama must denounce what his community stands for in order to move towards the future. He cannot have it both ways...or else nothing really changes.

Religion & race are big issues today. It did not help America when Christian Conservatives voted Bush in...and its going to be the same with Obama who uses religion & black slavery to reign in votes....can we pick a President without this baggage for once...?

I've got an upcoming post that documents the fact that Obama knew of the Wright issue and the controversy surrounding Wright's statements over a year ago. Having a prominent politician like Obama go on national television and lie, claiming that this is all somehow news to him, is disgraceful.

And rather than admit the truth, Obama comes up with another flowery speech.

A man goes to his wife and says,"Honey, I love you but I cheated on you." Wife gets angry and kicks him out of the house. A week later she invites him back and forgives him because he had the guts to tell her the truth. In fact, she respects him even more. Wife also feels guilty and because of that lets him go out even more. "Poor guy" she says "I must have stressed him out". But what do hubby do?...he fools around even more with his new found freedom.

Don't be fooled by someone's genuinely and voluntarily act to finally come out to tell the truth....because he is still going to the same church. Nothing changes and no lesson learned here except of the fact that Americans are easily fooled by great speeches.

Why didn't Mitt Romney condemn and then leave the Mormon Church in his 20's when they practiced institutional racial discrimination?

There's a clear double standard in how Obama is being treated by his critics. There are plenty of outrageous statements that have been made by all sorts of religious leaders. Billy Graham's comments about Jews; Jerry Falwell blaming gays for 9/11. The list goes on and on.

Either Obama was familiar with this man and his beliefs or Obama is so poor a judge of character that even after 20 years of close personal ties he didn't have a clue. Either way - this doesn't reflect well on Obama.

If any of those people are lifelong personal friends and mentors of any of the current Presidential candidates, that's worth discussing. If not, it's irrelevant to the debate on the current Presidential candidates.

Obama had the audacity to claim the quite racist Reverend Wright as his mentor and guiding light, and then had the further audacity of claiming that Barack Obama is the candidate to elevate the nation above race and gender, and unite the country.

What a pile of crap.

How do you figure someone is a racist because they are talking about issues that face blacks? It is a church - last time I checked the views of religion are to be separate from government. It doesn't matter if you agree with it or not but there is some truth to what he has said behind the pulpit. The guy has been through some serious stuff just like our troops in Iraq. Do you think Bush cares if you are black or white or brown or green, as long as you can pick up a gun, he wants you over there fighting his made up war. That is the issue

Come on Americans, lets move beyond the words. The leaders in my country cannot speak for nuts. They are arrogant and lets not even talk about their character or personality. But the country runs smoothly...in just a span of just 40 years we have accomplished so much. Our prosperity was not based on great speeches made by leaders. It was achieved by what we call 'lead by example', hard work and our can do spirit. We did not waste any time sitting down in front of the television to listen to great speeches. Maybe Americans can learn something from this.

Big D:

And yes America "The Ball is in your court" as spoken by another Black Pastor to tell Americans to come out and denounce racism. Actually, he meant come out and vote Obama. As to why Obama is not quiting his church...the new sorry excuse from Obama, his supporters and many black pastors is that he will not run away from the problem because to solve the problem you must face it to try and change it. Well, Obama had 20 years to do so and he did nothing. Instead, he only decided to do something now because he had been caught with his pants down.

So, any of you who was formerly a supporter of OSAMA BIN LADIN, please go back to your fellowship and try to change OSAMA & GANG...let me know what comes out of it.

Need to know what's the connection with Obama & CNN. They seem to be giving him an easy ride on this latest issue with Rev Wright. They are now commenting how wonderful his speech was and bringing in pro Obama supporters to his defense. If you notice the clip on Rev Wright...you will notice that they have even shorten it by removing comments made by Rev Wright about Hillary Clinton.

Wright says that White people created the AIDs virus to use against Black people. He says that the US government uses drugs and the Three Strike Rule to keep Black people in prison. He says that "rich white people" killed a "poor black Jesus."
-If that's not racist, then I must be taking crazy pills. Wright blaming all of the troubles of Black Americans on White Americans is disturbingly reminiscent of another famous orator...you know, the one who blamed all of his country's problems on Jewish people...what was his name...?

jpm100:

Obama has used the timing of last weekend to avoid the bulk of questions on the top. Then he gives a crafted speech with no follow up questions. And with a coming Easter weekend, I'm guess he'll manage to duck most questions for another whole weekend. Nice to be able to get away with that

He's likely to have successfully controlled the discussion for well over a week with his crafted speech as his core response we have to discuss on the issue.

Wright's statements weren't only race oriented. 9/11 trutherism isn't a Black Thing. Wright has general Anti-Americanism as part of his Speech. But Obama has made this entirely about race. A psychological victory. Reporters would have been quicker to confront Obama about Supporting Anti-Americanism. There's a tremendous PC awkwardness of a reporter accusing a Black man like Obama of supporting racism unless they have him on video tape like they do Wright.

His next step is trying to make this an issue about America's race issues and not about Obama's & Wright's race issues.

Are you all saying that because Obama didn't "denounce" Wright that he believes whatever Wright preaches? So you believe everything your own mentors, pastors, professors, teach/preach and if they stand for something offensive, you denounce them publicly and stay within your own safe little cocoon feeding yourself your own fluids. You're too smart for that and so is Obama, they all are. This is all a waste, it was a good speech. The news hole must be pretty big. Better clean the cat box.

Question. How much pork did Obama send to Ill. St. Senator Pres. Jones? Answer $10 Mil. Seems that for 5 of the six years Obama served in that body, no legislation with his name on it got passed. When the dems took the Ill. Senate in 1996, Jones gave Obama authorship of all the important legislation, inspite of the fact is was not true. This was the leg up needed by Obama to get to the Senate. He really is scum of the earth.

We would like to thank the following groups for making this all come true.

1) Democrats who do not like Hillary Clinton
2) Whites who feel guilty
3) Anti-War Protestors...like blame Hillary for that.
4) Democrats who feel that Obama has good judgement...like Rev Wright is a good example
5) Most of the Black Community
6) People who do not like the idea of another Clinton in power.
7) People waiting for hope
8) People wanting change in Washington...like forget about the other more important changes needed
9) Suckers of great speeches
10) And last but not least...the disillusioned, inmature, naive and confused spoiled brats of America.
