Clinton Campaign Woes Continue

Hillary Clinton's beleaguered presidential campaign is apparently having trouble paying its bills according Politico:

Clinton's camp has put off paying bills for months, earning campaign a reputation as something of a deadbeat in some small-business circles.

Hillary Rodham Clinton's cash-strapped presidential campaign has been putting off paying hundreds of bills for months -- freeing up cash for critical media buys but also earning the campaign a reputation as something of a deadbeat in some small-business circles.

A pair of Ohio companies owed more than $25,000 by Clinton for staging events for her campaign are warning others in the tight-knit event production community -- and anyone else who will listen -- to get their cash upfront when doing business with her. Her campaign, say representatives of the two companies, has stopped returning phone calls and e-mails seeking payment of outstanding invoices. One even got no response from a certified letter.

The Politico story goes on to explain how Clinton's campaign would be technically underwater (excluding money she's raised for the general) were it not for the $5 million that she loaned herself.

Obama picked up another superdelegate when Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar endorsed him:

"My endorsement reflects both Barack's strong support in my state and my own independent judgment about his abilities," Klobuchar said.

She cited their work together on issues such as ethics reform and toy safety.

"Barack has been a proven agent for change and advocate for middle-class Americans," Klobuchar said.

Taegan Goddard reports that seven North Carolina congressmen are ready to endorse Obama as a group just before the state's March 6 primary where a newly released ARG poll shows him way out in front:

Obama: 52%
Clinton: 38%

Clinton really needs a win in North Carolina (or at least keep it close) if she is going to do anything other than roughly split the remaining pledged delegates that are up for grabs.

Gallup has updated their daily poll and it has even more bad news for Clinton:

Obama: 52%
Clinton: 42%

This is the first time either candidate has had a double-digit lead since early February. Statewide matchup polls against McCain also continue to undermine the Clinton campaign's case that her victories in the big states demonstrate she would be the stronger candidate in the general.

This weekend's media narrative didn't help Clinton much either. With all the talk of when and whether she should drop out there is undoubtedly going to be wind taken out of her sails. It will be interesting to see how she responds to this string of bad news. My prediction: she will launch a vicious and personal negative attack on Obama. This time it may be over his youthful experimentation with illegal drugs.

Steve Crickmore:

Larkin, Mark Penn you may recall already tried that in a back-handed way, "Well, I think we've made clear that the issue related to cocaine use is not something that the campaign was in any way raising", but it didn't get much traction. It is a pretty old and I think an irrelevant issue, especially as Bill may have been doing something similar, in the governor's residence in Arkansas.

Hillary is in a bind because the quickest and most natural way for her to diminish the gap between Obama and herself is to throw dirt at him. But this has the unattended consequence of lowering her approval rate, and causing some dissension in the undecided superdelegates who don't like the mud throwing and are already very well aware of Obama's background, and don't really appreciate Hillary trying to bring up real or imagined failings in Obama, especially when he was very young. I think the public is starting to catch on and with an approval rate now down to 37% what does she hope to accomplish. She should change her tactics and find some inspiration on the campaign trail, but she seems to have precluded soaring rhetoric as well.

As the vetting of the ward ... (Below threshold)

As the vetting of the ward heeler, Obama is pursued, perhaps we face the fact that neither of these empty suits should even be considered as Presidential material. Somewhere in Chicago ward politics, Obama has been a protege of either the Washington or Daley family. He is simply a socialist in the Saul Alinsky mode and Hillary is just another female McGovern. The fact that the media is in love with these two is nauseous when one remembers that national security, our free enterprise economy, jurist selections are coming and these two would have a chance to undermine our whole democratic republican capitalistic system. Both seem to want govt. mandates on everything choice, real choice was allowed to human beings in this free republic. She can't even pay off health premiums and she wants socialized medicine as he does!!! If American wants to look like a failed European society, these two flacks are perfect. Too bad that the media and their mavens are not old enough or wise enough or historically able enough to not have inspected how close these two look like Norman Thomas, Upton Sinclair, Henry Wallace, or Gus Hall!!

When I was in the newspaper... (Below threshold)

When I was in the newspaper business, we had one rule for political ads: paid in advance.

I don't understand how anyone in any business is dumb enough to do anything else. Don't they realize that once goods or services are delivered, their perceived value declines - along with the desire to pay for them? And that losing campaigns, in primaries OR general elections, usually have no money left? And that while some losing campaigns do pay off their debts many years later, most never do?

Remember in the 2004 cycle Al Sharpton ran up tens of thousands of dollars in bills at 4-star hotels and limo services? Who in their right mind extends credit to a fringe candidate with a history of ducking his debts?

The NC House delegation endorsing Obama en masse would be good for his campaign ahead of the primary. Just a couple of questions on this: are these six part of the "50 super delegates" who supposedly going to endorse him after Texas and Ohio? Or part of the 20 he supposedly has "in his pocket?"

One more: if it does NOT happen, for whatever reason, will we then not hear any more about it than those other supposed endorsements that didn't happen?

That one sort of dropped off the radar screen. You have to wonder if Tom Brokaw was duped by someone in the Obama campaign who just wanted to spread the rumor.

Scrapiron:

Shrillary should be watching OReilly tonight. He had a black racist professor ??? on and Old Bill true to form stated that the Revrund Racist Wright (and OBambi) have set race relations back 20 years. I disagree with that, it has set race relations back a hundred years and as soon as the majority of non-black Americans figure it out OBambi had better have a deep hole to hide in, Maybe Osama and Obama can hide in the same hole. It's not going to be pretty for any black in this country. I've heard dozens of comments already and it's early yet.

Scrapiron:

Another thing, OBambi had better learn not to stick his finger in peoples face. Me or most of the guys I was stationed with during 22 years of military service would rip it off and stick it up his nose or in some other orfice in a shady place. That's a fact.
