The latest wacky idea from the 2008 Presidential campaign.
Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton is in Memphis today where, as part of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, she is proposing the creation of a Cabinet-level "poverty czar" devoted to addressing and ending poverty in the nation.Hillary lives in a dream land. There will always be poor people. Attempts at equality for all, namely communism, end up with a nation of poor people(Cuba), or poor and starving people(North Korea). Only the country's leadership and a few other select classes get to live outside of poverty. In prepared remarks for a speech at the Mason Temple, the Democratic presidential contender used the proposal to again promote herself as a candidate of solutions--a frequent theme that attempts to contrast herself to the rhetoric and experience of her rival for the nomination, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
"When I say solutions, I mean finally addressing the scourge of poverty that continues to afflict so many of our families in this country," Clinton says, according to remarks provided to NBC News.
"I mean appointing a Cabinet level position that will be solely and fully devoted to ending poverty as we know it in America, a position that will focus the attention of our nation on this issue," Clinton says.
BTW will the czar work for free? Think how many people you can feed with the salary that will saved.(Cue the sarcastic laughter)
Is it November yet?

It's probably just a ploy to see if she get John Edwards to endorse her.
I agree that it's a dumb idea to have a cabinet-level position.

The biggest health problem for "poor" people in America today is obesity. Most have air conditioning, multiple televisions, at least one car, cell phones, and cable or satellite TV.
In much of the world, they would be considered rich. In fact, with their in-kind benefits, today's "poor" would have been scored solidly in the middle income range in 1970.
If Hillary is so concerned about the poor, she should make her husband give some of his $80+ million income to charity, instead of dreaming up ways to suck more blood from the productive to transfer to the non-productive.

The war on poverty has been going on too long, when are we going to have a withdraw date?

Ah, so she admits that the war on poverty has been woefully unsuccessful. It's only taken the last half century for a Democrat to figure this out. I'm glad to see she's willing to overhaul the welfare system now. There's lots of help for her if she truly wants to reach across the aisle.

This is nothing more than ANOTHER attempt by Hellery to copy Barack Obama. She has been a johnny come lately to almost every position which Obama was first on.
Barack Obama has had a plan for a cabinet level department on poverty since the beginning of his campaign. Even Edwards did not have such a thing, and certainly Hellery didn't. This position has been on Obama's website in his blueprint for change since day one of this campaign. Leave it to Hellery to co-opt from someone else and try to claim it as her own idea.
Anywho, back in December there was an extensive comparison of Obama, Hellery, and Edward's economic and poverty plans, and Obama got the highest marks with specific mention of his initiative to establish this cabinet level department on poverty. here is the link and an excerpt:

Of the three Democratic frontrunners, Obama's is the only site providing specific attention to urban poverty. A seven page document posted on the website entitled "Changing the Odds for Urban America," states that Obama would take "addressing urban America seriously" and would create a White House Office on Urban Policy. While not a blueprint, the document does address key urban issues including addressing the need for programs to "make jobs pay " and to expand efforts to provide childcare, public transit, housing and urban reinvestment.
Does this woman have even ONE decent original idea? sheesh!
