NY Governor Deflects Senate Questions

The former Lt. Governor who replaced disgraced Eliot Spitzer refuses to speculate on who'll he name to replace Hillary Clinton.

Gov. David A. Paterson confirmed on Monday that he will not appoint a replacement for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton until Mrs. Clinton resigns from the United States Senate, which would not happen until January at the earliest.

President-elect Barack Obama officially announced on Monday morning that Mrs. Clinton was his choice for secretary of state. She is widely expected to be confirmed by the Senate.

The appointment to replace Mrs. Clinton, who was elected in 2000, will be one of Mr. Paterson's most closely watched decisions, and already there is fierce speculation over who might be named. It will be the first time the governor of New York has had to name a senator since 1968, when Nelson A. Rockefeller appointed Representative Charles E. Goodell, a fellow Republican, after the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a Democrat. Mr. Paterson and Mrs. Clinton are both Democrats.

Mrs. Clinton's replacement will have to run again in a special election in 2010 to complete the remainder of her six-year term, which is to expire at the end of 2012.

That Patterson won't name who is under consideration comes as no surprise. We'll leave it to the New York Times' Sewell Chan to do that for us.

Many names have been discussed in political circles, among them Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo, a son of a former governor; Representatives Nydia M. Velázquez, Kirsten E. Gillibrand, Brian Higgins, Steve Israel, Nita M. Lowey and Gregory W. Meeks; Mayor Byron W. Brown of Buffalo; and Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy, who worked on Mr. Obama's campaign.
How about Spitzer? I hear no charges will be filed against him. LOL, I'm only kidding. How about former President Bill Clinton then?
