Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki indicted

I think this throws a monkey wrench is his plans to run against Senator Harry Reid in 2010.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki was indicted Wednesday on four felony charges that he misappropriated state funds during his time as state treasurer.

A Clark County grand jury returned the indictment against Krolicki and his chief of staff, Kathy Besser, on Wednesday morning. Krolicki is charged with two counts of misappropriation and falsification of accounts by a public officer and two counts of misappropriation by a treasurer.

The funds have been accounted for, and Krolicki is not accused of embezzling money.

Asked whether the charges constituted political corruption, Chief Deputy Attorney General Conrad Hafen said, "It's a charge relating to a public officer failing to properly execute his duties and responsibilities while in office, specifically as it pertains to money owed to the state."

If he didn't embezzle the money, and I may be assuming wrongly, then he didn't use the money for himself or some political purpose. Then why the prosecution? If simple misappropriation of taxpayer money was prosecuted all the time, we'd have tons of cases like this.

That doesn't mean I think politicians and unelected government officials shouldn't be held accountable. Krolicki is saying this prosecution is politically motivated and puts the blame for it on Senator Reid. That makes me who is already suspicious when it comes to political wrongdoing, even more so. No matter what the outcome I think Nevada Republicans would be wise to find someone else to challenge Reid.

Yeah, we can't have folks like Krolicki held accountable for felonious actions, now can we? Let's get rid of Reid and elect someone who will let Republicans misappropriate funds with impunity...

Never mind that we don't know if Krolicki is guilty or not, or if Reid is really behind this -- all we have to support the contention that Reid is pulling strings here is Krolicki's word. Let's just go ahead and blame it on Reid... cause the accused felon says it was Reid's fault. He wouldn't have any reason to lie about it, now would he?

Stevens was found guilty of failing to report more than $250,000 worth of building work on his "chalet" and other gifts from an Alaska oil company.

In an act of defiance, he went from the courtroom in Washington straight back home to Alaska to campaign vigorously for re-election, casting his conviction as politically motivated. He also said he would appeal the verdict.

The strategy, which played on Alaskans' distrust of the mainland, initially seemed successfully. Even Begich was cautious of directly criticising Stevens.

Yep - that's how the right wing works the system. They cast doubt on those who oppose their crookery, all the while claiming those eeevil Democrats are not being honest - as they are frog marched out of office as convicted felons.

These are the ethics of the party opposing the Democrats in the 2008 election? No wonder Obama won by a landslide...

According to the Associated Press:

The charges arose from a 2007 audit of a $3 billion-plus, state-run college savings program. Auditors found Krolicki skirted budget controls and spent more on an advertising campaign than allotted by the Legislature. No money is missing and he is not accused of embezzlement.

He isn't accused of stealing or embezzling funds, just spending more than was budgeted on advertising.
